My PS 72!

As already discussed elsewhere I took the opportunity of a sudden price drop for the above (something like 25% off in France) to buy it and sell my Blacktop Stratocaster instead (for about the same price, partly due to the $ to € exchange rate). The reduction was probably due to Fender discontinuing its production of the Pawn Shop series (and I think also discontinuing this particular model) in Japan and transferring it to the Mexican plant. Anyway all shops that had remaining items from the first Pawn Shop series (this PS'72 in 3TS and the '51 model in black) were selling it at bargain rates.

I am really pleased by this one as it is a Strat-like guitar (with a cool contoured body) which avoids all the things I did not really like in the Stratocaster (vibrato bridge, metal piece in the back, strangely positioned selector). Also and, most importantly, the pickups are way better than on the Blacktop Stratocaster, at least for clear tones. The neck pickup has a very jazzy subdued color, while the bridge one (so-called "enforcer") has a strong sharp bite (which even I tend to prefer to the one on the Thinline Telecaster).

The build quality appears to be great, as seem to be expected from Fender Japan (or so says the rumor), although I had to significantly adjust the intonation (first time I am doing this!) which was very significantly off (octave about +25 cent sharp, nearly for all strings) despite the shop claiming to have checked the setup.

There are a few things I miss like the front jack output, which I believe is better than the bottom one and the fact that despite the small chamber it is a bit heavier than the Blacktop Strat (at something like 3.3 kg). Also, I am still hesitant on whether I really like the sunburst + rosewood fretboard but it is not without charms (including the fact that you can really see the wood).

Check it on Fender Japan's site and Fender US site as well on this nice video demo (there are thousands of videos on the web showing guitar demos but this guy is I must say the only one who plays the guitars the way I would like to if I could!)
